Mostly young and rural, the Burkinabe population lives mainly from agropastoral activities. This resilient population is looking for ways to achieve sustainable development in the face of climatic shocks in an increasingly difficult security context with many internally displaced people.

Since 1970, SNV has supported Burkinabè to meet the challenges in different areas of development, creating a significant and impactful systemic change. With offices in Ouagadougou, Fada N'Gourma, Ouahigouya, Bobo-Dioulasso, Koudougou and Dédougou, SNV is present throughout the country. It is a key partner of governmental and development actors.

In the field of sanitation, SNV has contributed, since 2016, to make more than 250 villages open-defecation free in a context where open-defecation is the cause of 11.5% of mortality in children under five years and many waterborne diseases in the population. At the same time, it has enabled the construction of 16,000 latrines thanks to the ATPC approach. SNV is involved in Integrated Water Resources Management, particularly through the construction/rehabilitation of boreholes and dams.

SNV is also one of the pioneers in developing the biodigester sector, leading to the construction of more than 15,000 biodigesters by 2022, which provide access to clean cooking and high-quality organic fertiliser for agropastoral households.

SNV contributes to the transition to sustainable and resilient agri-food systems that ensure food security and adequate nutrition for people in all their diversity. Over the past five years, we have increased productivity by 10-30% and improved incomes by at least 17% for over 500,000 farmers, pastoralists, and agropastoralists. At least 100,000 hectares of degraded land have been reclaimed, and more than 10 million euros of private funding have been mobilised to finance agri-food value chains.

SNV is proud to have contributed to improving the resilience and predictability of Burkinabe agropastoralists through innovative technologies.
