SNV started operating in Burundi in 2021 to support the country’s 10-year development plan (2018-2027), which targets raising economic growth to 10.7 %.

Our area of work is in the agri-food sector, where we aim to improve the livelihoods of farm households, youth, women and market actors through increased income, improved food and nutrition security and resilience to climate change. Our innovative approaches allow us to achieve those goals, notably inclusive value chain development and access to finance, youth employment and entrepreneurship, nutrition promotion, gender equality and social inclusion, and hygiene integration.

As a result of our interventions:

  • Production is increasing, and supply contracts between SMEs and producer organisations are established.

  • Young people are self-employed, and small and medium enterprises are created and strengthened in the selected value chains, providing more opportunities for youth.

  • Women are starting to gain access to more diversified foods through kitchen gardens, while the availability of nutritious products is increasing in the value chains.
