SNV has been working to support communities in Rwanda since 1980. This landlocked nation heavily relies on agriculture both for its growing population and as a key export. Working with smallholder farmers, SNV has supported income growth for more than 40,000 farmers who produced an additional € 15.1 million.

Mitigating environmental impacts whilst strengthening agricultural value chains has resulted from innovative public/private partnerships. Working in partnership with the Government of Rwanda, agricultural exports are increasing, smallholder farmers are thriving, and environmental agri-businesses are growing.

Combining our global state-of-the-art expertise with local know-how, SNV offers solutions for energising households, businesses and social institutions, both for domestic and productive uses. Reducing environmental impact is also the energy programme's focus, through the promotion of clean cooking, the production and dissemination of improved cookstoves, and other cooking energy solutions. SNV is on-track to disseminate 500,000 clean cookstoves before 2025, using market-based approaches.

Access to water and sanitation is one of the priorities for the SDGs and the Rwanda Economic Development Poverty Reduction Strategy II. Though Rwanda made great progress and is internationally known for its clean streets, many people still do not have internationally recommended access to water and sanitation. SNV in Rwanda’s main focus is on the functionality and sustainability of the service provision.
