Innovative dairy farming in East Africa
Through partnership, we aspire to transform smallholder dairy farming in Africa by placing the cow at the centre of farm management.
Abstract
East Africa’s dairy sector faces persistent challenges, including low milk yields far below cattle potential. Smallholder farmers rely heavily on rainfed pastures and crop residues, leading to seasonal feed shortages. Limited access to finance, weak milk collection and storage infrastructure, and low adoption of technologies such as artificial insemination and digital advisory tools further constrain productivity. Together, these barriers reduce farmer incomes and limit the sector’s contribution to food security and rural economic growth.
Learn about the Lactation Cycle Approach (LCA), which promotes innovative dairy farming practices that prioritise the health, welfare, and productivity of cows throughout the lactation cycle.
